Up late … get breakfast… visit Power UP distributor in Whitehorse… Wash the now putridly stinking Bugs off the bikes… and Fuel up… Red Bull up and out the door this time at the crack of noon. Oh well we only need to get to Dawson City and it’s only about 600 km… Start in a good down pour and turn off the Alaska Highway and on to the Klondike Highway to go north to Dawson… the road is surprisingly great and the vistas are well “Big”… Big rivers … big mountains … big valleys and well ….GREG.
We get to Carmacks and stop at the tourist info site… and tour around for a few minutes… then off to Pelley Crossing…
We buy some Oil for Gregs bike at Pelly Crossing and continue to Stewart Crossing we stop for fuel but the lines are so long that we decide to push on to Dawson City…
About 120 km out we start to go slower and slower to preserve fuel... the road turns to dirt and well engineered gravel and we’re going 60-70 kmh … we get to the turn off to Inuvik and there is a gas station… it’s about 50 km to Dawson and our computers show 47 km of fuel left… We decide to fuel up… The amount of dredging that was done in and around Dawson city is … well… amazing. To think that a lot of this work was done before 1900 is a tribute to ingenuity and damn hard work.
It never gets dark and that’s starting to mess with my head. After dinner we wander around the town and check out the ferry that we’ll be taking in the morning and head over to Diamond Gertties, a local watering hole. With period entertainment. It was hmmm… entertaining.
